Helping a Loved One Make Healthy Changes

Elder Care in Crestline OH

A healthy diet is important for people of all ages, but is especially critical for older adults. As we age, our metabolism slows down and we are at a high risk of a wide range of health problems, such as type 2 diabetes  and heart disease. By taking care of our bodies, we can reduce the likelihood of developing these conditions, improve our immune system, and live a healthy life.

However, making these changes is easier said than done. But with the support and encouragement of an elder care provider, along with these tips, your loved one will be able to make healthy changes for a healthier lifestyle.

  • Keep a food diary. In order to show your loved one exactly how poor their eating habits are, write it down. Keep a journal of all meals and snacks the elder consumes in a day. After a week or two, show it to them. It may be the wakeup call they need to start their diet.
  • Make small changes. Saying that the elder will switch their red meat diet to one that is rich in fruits and veggies is a pretty unrealistic goal to set. Instead, make gradual changes to their diet. For example, instead of using salt you could use fresh herbs. Or instead of reaching for a snack that is high in fat, they could try a fruit or vegetable. Eventually more healthy changes can be added.
  • Do not leave out the treats. Unless their doctor says otherwise, there is nothing wrong with including a treat or two into their diet every once in a while. In fact, knowing that they will get one may give them the motivation needed to stay on track with their diet.
  • Make room for exercise. Physical activities are something that many seniors fail to do. It could be because of their lack of mobility or low energy levels. Whatever the reason, it is important that your loved one continue to get an adequate amount of exercise. Not only will it boost their energy, help them sleep at night, and improve any chronic pain they feel, but it will also help them reach their health goals quicker.
  • Get professional help. You may also want to consider asking the elder’s doctor for help. They may have some extra tips on helping your loved one stay healthy and fit. A physical therapist and dietician may also be able to help.
