Boosting Your Parent’s Mental Health during Be Kind To Humankind Week

Elder Care in Mt. Gilead OH

August 25 through 31 is Be Kind To Humankind Week. This is the ideal opportunity for your aging parent to find fun and engaging ways to give back to the community around them. Not only will this help them to improve the lives of others around them, but will also give them a boost in their own mental and emotional health.

Let these ideas inspire you for ways that your parent can boost and maintain their mental and emotional health during Be Kind To Humankind Week:

  • Visit others. Loneliness and isolation are extremely common among elderly adults, but they can negatively impact others as well. If your parent knows of a neighbor, friend, or family member, or other member of the community, who is in need of some support and companionship, encourage them to go spend some time with them. Just visiting with them can give your loved one a boost in their mood and emotional health, while also helping that person as well.
  • Offer to help. Many elderly adults struggle with feeling as though they are no longer relevant to the world around them. This can leave them feeling depressed, anxious, and without the motivation that they need to continue taking care of themselves. Help your parent to feel more valuable and important to the world around them by offering to help someone else. This can be as simple as sharing a special recipe with a friend or sharing gardening tips with a neighbor who has always admired their flowers.
  • Random acts of kindness. Being kind does not have to mean doing something big, expensive, or dramatic. Your parent can show kindness to others just though simple random acts of kindness wherever they go during the day. Add some change to the parking meters that are about to run out if your parent goes downtown. Put a lovely bookmark with an encouraging message on it into books in the library or that your parent donates to the used bookstore. Smile at everyone that they see during the day. Offer compliments to strangers.
  • Donate unneeded items. Most elderly adults have a wide variety of items in their home, their garage, or storage units that they do not use or need. Rather than throwing these items out, encourage your aging parent to donate them to a charity organization or thrift store so that they can be used again by others who may be in need of that particular item but may not have the budget to purchase those items new. This helps them to clear out their home while also showing kindness to others.
