Preparing Your Parent Ahead of a Severe Storm

Elder Care in Wooster OH

With the summer finally just around the corner many people are thinking about all of the fun that these warmer months have to offer. Amid all of your thoughts of summer road trips, visits to the beach, and cookouts with your friends and family, however, you must also keep in mind that summer weather means the potential for summer storms. In many areas, the summer months bring with them the potential for severe weather such as thunderstorm, hurricanes, and tornadoes. Knowing how to prepare for such a severe storm event is a crucial part of your summer elder care efforts and will give you greater peace of mind that your parent will be able to get through the storm as safely and healthily as possible.

Use these tips to help you prepare your parent ahead of time for a severe storm:

  • Talk about it. If there is imminent potential for severe weather, talk to your parent about it. Explain to them what type of weather is expected, how it will impact them, and what they need to do to not only get ready for it, but also what they should do during it. Talking through this information and feeling confident that they are informed will help the situation feel less frightening and enable you to put other plans into place.
  • Establish emergency care alternatives. When severe weather hits, you may not be close to your parent’s home and able to get to then. Make sure that you have the contact information of people who can help you to check on your parents, get them prepared, or even be with them throughout the storm. This care network can include neighbors, friends, family members, and even their elderly health care services provider.
  • Prepare the lawn. If a severe storm will be arriving soon, take the time to get the lawn ready. Loose items such as lawn furniture, lawn decorations, and tools can become flying debris during the high winds of a severe storm, and cause extensive property damage and even injury. Remove these items and secure them inside a shed, garage, or other structure. If your parent lives in a low-lying area and there is the possibility of flooding, consult with the authorities about proper measures to take to protect the home, such as using sandbags or creating a barrier.
  • Pack an emergency supply kit. Severe weather can result in flooding, power outages, the need to evacuate, and being stranded in the home for long periods. Help your parent prepare for this by packing a thorough emergency supply kit. This kit should contain the items that your parent will need to keep themselves healthy and comfortable should one of these situations occur. This kit should contain potable water, non-perishable food, changes of clothing, blankets, toiletry items, first aid supplies, a battery operated radio, medications, and entertainment items. If your parent has a pet, make sure that they pack an emergency kit for their pet as well.
