6 Activities You and Your Elderly Loved One Can Enjoy Together

Home Care in Ashland OH

It’s really easy to get stuck in a rut and to do the same types of things with your loved one. Consider some of these activity ideas and brainstorm some others that you can try out.

Bake Something Together

Maybe your elderly loved one is the gatekeeper for a favorite family recipe or she has a favorite baked good that you can make for her. Take the time to bake something together that you can both enjoy. Or consider making several to share with other friends and family members. Don’t forget to jot down the recipe if it’s one that you didn’t have before.

Spend Time in the Garden

Spending time in nature is a wonderful way for both you and your elderly loved one to recharge yourselves. If you enjoy actually getting your hands in the dirt, spend some time together gardening. It’s great exercise and it gives you time to bond with each other.

Head Out for a Coffee Date

Every once in a while you and your elderly loved one should make it a point to head out and spend some time together in another environment. Coffee dates are perfect for this, or you can go out for tea or a donut. Whatever gets you both out of the house and to another location works well. You can people watch and spend time just being together.

Take a Walk

Both you and your elderly loved one benefit from a little bit of exercise and a walk is the perfect way to do this. Start out gently and don’t plan to go long distances unless you’re both already used to walking a good bit. You can gradually add more distance to your walks.

Work on Chores Together

Chances are really good that you spend a lot of time taking care of chores for your elderly loved one so that she doesn’t have to worry about them herself. Try asking your loved one to do little things with you around the house. She’s likely to feel more useful then and you can use it as another opportunity to spend time with each other and to bond.

Go to the Zoo or the Museum

Zoos and museums can be a lot of fun no matter what your age is. They also don’t have to be a trip that you make all in one day. Zoos and museums both tend to have seating areas, so you can walk around at your leisure and rest for as long as you need to. Maybe spend one visit in a particular area and then come back to see the other sights if your loved one needs to split up the visit.

Talk to your loved one’s home care providers about other ideas for ways to spend quality time with your loved one.
