July is National Grilling Month

Senior Care in Loudonville OH

The month of July is well into the summer season and a time to try something new. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has declared July to be National Grilling Month. July can be used to spice up the menu of one in senior care and maybe be a source of anticipation for someone receiving home care.

Variety

Meals can get boring, especially if prepared the same way each week. A simple change from broiling chicken to grilling chicken can add a new taste and texture to meals. Loved ones receiving in-home care do not get the opportunity to go out to eat, so it is important to stimulate their appetites with a variety of meals. Spices can help when added to meats and simple seasonings such as rosemary or red pepper flakes add a kick to traditional meals. Try putting fish on the BBQ to increase the flavor of this protein-packed meal.

Marinade

With a little pre-planning, grilling for one receiving senior care can include marinating meats. Easy marinades include Italian dressing, or pre-made marinades are found in the dressing aisle of the grocery store. Loved ones enjoy Hawaii-based, pineapple chicken or Terriyaki pork chops. Always marinate meats in the refrigerator as opposed to the counter and never reuse one that has had raw meat in it.

Vegetables

The grill is not solely for meats, it can also be used for vegetables. Wrap potatoes in tin foil and grill them for a delicious flavor, or choose to grill corn on the cob at its peak flavor in July. Other veggies such as asparagus, corn and zucchini also are enhanced when given a little char from the grill.

Safety

One who is under home care needs to be kept safe. Food should be kept cold until ready to be grilled. Then, it should be grilled completely. A food thermometer can help as beef should be cooked to 160 degrees and poultry to 165 degrees. Only use a grill outdoors in an area away from the home and any overhangs. Keep children and pets away from the grill and always remain in sight of the grill while in use. If a gas smell is present, turn off the tank and stop using the grill.

National Grilling Month is an exciting time to try something new. A loved one receiving senior care may jump-start his appetite when he has new foods to look forward to each evening. Plus, the clean-up time is easier and the house stays cool during the warmer month of July. Experiment with a variety of foods including fruits and vegetables and the grill may become a part of each weekly meal time. Imagine a hearty BBQ’s burger in the middle of January. One cannot go wrong with that.
